Protologue citation:—“ Himalaya : Sikkim, Ongla – thang infra Kanchinjunga (herb. Calcutt.!).

Type:— INDIA. Sikkim: Ong-la-thang, below Kangchenjunga , July 1887, King’s collector s.n. (lectotype CAL0000018957 !, designated here) ; isolectotypes DD!, BM000885903!, K000739135!

Notes :— Pedicularis instar was described by Maximowicz (1888) based on specimens from Ong-la-thang, Sikkim, India in Calcutta herbarium ( CAL). He cited locality and name of herbarium in the protologue, but he did not mention the collector’s name, collection date and the specimen number. Pertaining to the type specification given in protologue, four herbarium sheets collected by King’s collector from Ong-la-thang, Sikkim were traced, one each at BM, CAL, DD and K. The specimen at BM ( BM000885903 ) is a part of CAL ( CAL0000018957 ) herbarium sheet, which was sent to G. H. Bonati on 20 March 1908 and is clarified from the notes written on the CAL sheet. The herbarium sheet at DD is actually a part of CAL herbarium which was distributed in the early nineteen century from CAL along with many other sheets of different collectors. Of these, the best one CAL0000018957, is designated here as the lectotype ; it also has drawing of flower parts on the sheet by D. Prain.
