19. Pedicularis hookeriana Wall. ex Benth. ( Bentham 1835: 53) .

Type:— INDIA. Uttarakhand: Kumaon, s.d., Wallich cat. n. 421 (lectotype K001110000!, designated here) ; isolectotype CAL!

= Pedicularis himalayca Klotzsch (1862: 107) .

Protologue citation:—“Dr. Hoffmeister fand diese Art im Himalaya ”.

Type:—“Illustration” Klotzsch in Bot. Ergebn. Reise Waldemar [Klotzsch & Garcke]: pl. 58. 1862 (lectotype, designated here).

Notes:— Pedicularis hookeriana was described by Bentham (1835) based on the specimens of Wallich from Kumaon and of Royle from Shimla and Kashmir. Presently, two specimens of Wallich from Kumaon, Uttarakhand, India are extant, one each at CAL and K. The better preserved specimen K001110000 from Wallich herbarium, is designated here as the lectotype.

Klotzsch (1862) described P. himalayca based on the collection of Dr. Hoffmeister from Himalaya . Klotzsch’s types are known to be held at B, but after contacting the curator of B herbarium, no specimen of Hoffmeister from Himalaya for the name P. himalayca Klotzsch could be traced and these are presumed to have been destroyed during World War II. Therefore, the plate 58 provided by Klotzsch in the protologue, is the only remaining original material and is therefore chosen here as the lectotype.
