Notes:— Pedicularis gracilis was described by Bentham (1835) based on the specimens of Wallich from Gossain Than, Nepal and Royle from Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India. Pennell (1943) cited type as “ Wallich 413” at K, however he did not specify which particular herbarium specimen at K was the type as there are three herbarium sheets of Wallich 413 (K000739044, K000739045 and K001109989). According to Art. 9.17 of ICN ( Turland et al. 2018), Pennell’s type citation must be accepted as the first-step lectotypification. The type citation of Pennell can be further narrowed to a single specimen by second-step lectotypification. Therefore, from the three specimens of Wallich cat. n. 413 at K, the best preserved specimen K000739044 from herbarium Benthamianum, is designated here as the second-step lectotype for the name P. gracilis Wall. ex Benth. The date 1829 mentioned on the sheet K000739044, is the date of inclusion of this specimen in the Wallich catalogue (Wallich cat. n. 413.2), not the year of collection.
