Status at New Ireland. First recorded from St. Mathias as Upeneus barberinus by Duncker & Mohr (1929: 66), based on ZMH 11822. Specimens observed by Jeff Kinch during CFMDP Survey at Kavieng fish market in 2004– 2005, and by Barry C. Russell during 7–28 June 2014. A specimen photographed at Lissenung Island , Kavieng District, 8 m depth, by Dean Tully on 5 July 2011; a video of a specimen taken at Martha's Shoal, off eastern New Hanover, at 7–41 m depth, St. KR 122, in 2014 (identified by Barry C. Russell).
Distribution and habitat. New Ireland: 1, 2, 4.—General distribution: South and East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Line, Marquesas and Gambier islands, north to southern Japan, south to Western Australia, New South Wales ( Australia), Lord Howe Island and Tonga. Found over sand and rubble adjacent to coral or rocky reefs, 1–100 m depth. Marine.
