Barcinus papuensis Kormilev 1971:130 (rec. PNG)

Barcinus papuensis Kormilev & Froeschner 1989: 112 (cat.)

Description was based on a female from New Guinea, Morobe District. Kormilev 1971 reports further specimens from “New Guinea ” deposited in the Bishop Museum Honolulu.

Material examined: 1♂ pinned, remounted on card: “N. Guinea / Morobe Distr. / Aseki 1200m / 3 XII 1974 / Petrus coll.”//” Barcinus / papuensis / Usinger & M./ Det.N.Kormilev 75” ( CEHI ex coll. Kormilev) ; 1♀ card mounted: “NG. Edie ck [=creek]/ 2050–2300m / 3 XI 1966 ”//”G.A.Samuelson / collector / Bishop”// ” Barcinus / papuensis / Usinger & M./ Det.N.Kormilev 68” ( CEHI) ; 1♂ pinned and remounted on card: “ PNG: New Guinea (NE)/W. Kormilev) ; 1♀ pinned: “ New Guinea (NE)/ Huon Peninsula / Zengaren 1200m / 28 IV 1963 ”//” J.Sedlacek / collector/ Bishop ”//” Barc. /pap./ Usinger & M./ Det.N.Kormilev 66 ( CEHI); 1♂, 2♀ card mounted:”NG Irian Jaya/ Jayawijaya Prov. / N Bime 2000–2070m / 21 IX 1993 A.Riedel ” ( CEHI) .

The description of the female holotype is very detailed. Therefore only some additional remarks concerning the male are given (♂ from Morobe /Aseki Oiwa): Abdomen less rounded and wide and more constricted across deltg IV and V than in female; pe-angles of deltg IV and V less produced; upper half of pygophore produced posteriorly as a long conical sclerite, its dorsal face is horizontal (figs. 39, 40); paratergites VIII lanceolate and reaching or slightly produced over apex of pygophore, both distinctly shorter than apex of posteriorly expanded lobe of deltg VII; left paramere as figs. 35–38.

Measurements. Length 12.9 mm; length/width of head 28/25; pronotum 2.15x as wide as long at middle (43/15); scutellum w/l 23/16; length of antennal segments I/II/III/IV = 17/9/17/8; ratio length of antennae / width of head 3.40; width of abdomen across tergite III 63, IV 59, V 55, VII 61, VIII 36.

Variation of size: ♂ 12.0, 13.6, 14.1mm; ♀ 14.7mm.

Distribution. Most of the known records are from Northern New Guinea ( PNG) ranging from Stanley Owen Range in the East to Morobe and Huon Peninsula; however the confirmed records from Irian Jaya extend the distribution range to Western New Guinea. Map 2.

Papuabarcinus papuensis is closest to P. laminiferus in sharing the long posteriorly produced lobes of deltg VI and VII. They can be separated by the characters given in the key.
