S[cops] longipennis “Licht[enstein]” Kaup, 1853: 110. [“Northern Africa”]
Now. Otus scops pulchellus (Pallas, 1771) . See Hartert (1913: 978).
Type series. Not specified by Kaup (1853). Lichtenstein (1825, Nr. 526–528) listed three specimens collected in “ Syria Julio” as Strix striolata . The same three specimens were later listed by him ( Lichtenstein 1854: 7) as Ephialtes longipennis . Kaup (1853: 110) created his Scops longipennis with reference to S[cops] longipennis of Lichtenstein (which was an unpublished name at that time, first mentioned by Lichtenstein in his Nomenclator; Lichtenstein 1854: 7) and to Str[ix] striolata Homb. [sic! = Hemprich] and Ehrenb[erg]. The original type series of Scops longipennis Kaup thus consisted of the three specimens mentioned by Lichtenstein (1825, 1854). Two of them are still deposited in ZMB, while one was forwarded to RMNH in 1863 (Inventory Catalogue of the ZMB, H. van Grouw, in litt. 2007).
Syntype. ZMB 1199, skin, unsexed, collected in July 1824 in “ Syrien ” ( Lichtenstein 1825, 1854) or at “Bischenette” [sic] (label) [= northern Lebanon].
Syntype. ZMB 1201, skin, unsexed, collected in July 1824 in “ Syrien ” ( Lichtenstein 1825, 1854, label) [= northern Lebanon].
Syntype. RMNH 90964 (formerly ZMB 1200), unsexed, collected in July 1824 in “ Syrien ” ( Lichtenstein 1825, 1854, label) [= northern Lebanon]. This specimen was omitted by Hoek Ostende et al. (1997).
Type locality. The type locality was originally given as “ Syria ” ( Lichtenstein 1825, 1854; Kaup 1853, 1862; Hartert 1913: 978). Data in Lichtenstein (1825) allow restricting the type locality to northern Lebanon, where Hemprich and Ehrenberg collected in July 1824. The locality “Bischenette” [sic!], i.e. “Bischerre” = Bcharré, is listed on a label attached to specimen ZMB 1199, but the source of this information is unknown. We thus restrict here the type locality of Scops longipennis Kaup to northern Lebanon between Beirut, Baalbek and Tripoli, where all syntypes were collected in July 1824.
Remarks. Kaup (1853: 110) attributed this species name to Lichtenstein, but he is its author ( ICZN 1999, Art. 51.1).
