Plants epiphytic, rarely lithophytic, sympodial; roots filiform, not thickened, glabrous; rhizome abbreviated, inconspicuous; stems swollen in cylindrical to fusiform pseudobulbs, homoblastic, basally stipitate, covered by foliar sheaths, usually with purple stripes to totally purple and pale-yellow when dehydrated. Leaves conduplicate, appearing in the entire pseudobulb or only in its upper portion, oblong to oblanceolate, coriaceous, fleshy or semi-terete, green, glaucous, apex retuse, often asymmetric, base cuneate. Inflorescence erect, apical, with few flowered panicles, rarely in very short racemes. Flowers resupinate, successive, green, yellowish, brownish, purplish, or vinaceous. Sepals free, lanceolate, apex normally cuspidate, base sessile; petals free, linear, spatulate or obtrullate; lip articulate with the column foot, genuflected, obovate, ligulate or subquadrangular, rarely with a callus at the disc, apex normally retuse to apiculate, base attenuate. Gynostemium erect, purple-spotted, with a prominent foot and lateral wings; anther incumbent, operculate, subglobose or cordiform, bilocular; pollinia 4, waxy, unequal, with caudicles. Ovary articulated with the pedicel, glabrous. Capsule, fusiform, glabrous or papillose.
