Type citation:— “ W. Ghats in the Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Anamalai, Pulney and Tinnevelly Hills, up to 5,000 ft. ”

Type:— INDIA. Tamil Nadu: Tirunelveli District (Tinnevelly), Tinnevelly hills, s.d., Beddome s.n. (lectotype K 000695611!, designated by Matthew (1991: 543))

Other original material: — INDIA. Tamil Nadu: Nilgiri District (Nilgiris), Kalhatty, June 1884, M. A. Lawson s.n. ( MH 00001974!), Gudallur, May 1888, M. A. Lawson s.n. ( MH 00001975!).

Notes:— This species was described by Gamble based on the collections from Nilgiri, Coimbatore, Anamalai, Pulney and Tinnevelly hills. Three herbarium sheets of N. beddomei were traced ( K000695611 !, MH00001974 !, MH00001975 !), all containing drawings and determination by J. S. Gamble. In this case, no specimens are actually cited in the protologue, so there are no syntypes. Only localities are cited, so the specimens traced are uncited specimens, which under Art. 9.12 have equal precedence to cited or uncited illustrations when choosing a lectotype. Matthew’s statement “ N. beddomei Gamble , l.c. Type: Beddome s.n. 12/79 Tinnevelly ( K)” should be considered as effective lectotypification effective as long as it refers to a specimen that is original material for the name (see Art. 9.4(a)—the protologue mentions only localities, no gatherings/ specimens, i.e. syntypes, are cited; cf. Art. 40 Note 2) .
