Neopatersonia namaquensis Lewis (1952: 6) View in CoL

Type (lectotype, here designated):— SOUTH AFRICA. Namaqualand, 27 miles south of Springbok, Fl 27 Jul 1950, flowered SAM, May 1951, G. J. Lewis 2318 ( SAM, bar code 0060893-0: the 11 flowering plants gathered on May 1951, excluding the infructescence located in the middle on the left side of the sheet).

The protologue of Neopatersonia namaquensis cites: “Hab. Namaqualand: on a stony slope near the roadside between Springbok and Garies, twenty-seven miles south of Springbok, Lewis, South African Museum no. 60893 (Type, in S. A. M. Herbarium), fruit 27 July 1950; flowers May 1951 ”. Furthermore , at the end of the original description it was said: “The small and rather insignificant plants were in fruit when collected in Namaqualand at the end of July. Some bulbs were planted at the South African Museum Herbarium where they flowered in May [of] the following year”. The so-called “ holotype ” ( SAM, bar code 0060893-0) comprises 12 plants, most of them with bulbs, leaves and inflorescences, but one shows ripe capsules. This agrees with the information in the original description, and therefore it is evident that the “type sheet” consists of plants in flower and fruit collected at different times. As the name was published prior to 1 January 1958, there was no need to indicate a holotype according to Art. 8.2, and therefore it is validly published. However, the selection of a lectotype is necessary, since the original material corresponds to two different gatherings, which are syntypes. We here designate all eleven flowering individuals of the sheet SAM 0060893 View Materials -0 as the lectotype of the name, excluding explicitly the only infructescence on the left side of that sheet .
