Type locality: Nagasaki, Japan .

Morphometrics: Valves 34–40 (33–47) μm long, 20–21 (21–27) μm wide, transapical striae 15–16 (15) in 10 μm, puncta on a stria 16–17 (16–18) in 10 μm.
Remarks: Navicula semiarea is distributed in the marine waters of East Asia (Hustedt 1961–1966), and was reported only from Japan, Nagasaki and Niijima Island ( Suzuki et al. 1999). This taxon is probably distributed in the coastal regions of oceans in Northeast Asia. It was found twice in the salt marshes of the Seogwipo coast in Jeju Island, and represents a new taxon for South Korea.
