Myrcia and Pimenta can be easily confused, as both genera contain species with paniculate inflorescences and a pentamerous open calyx ( Flickinger et al. 2020). However, the inflorescence of the type collection of Myrcia majaguitana does not have the typical triangular shape of Myrcia with terminal dichasia; it is instead paniculateglomerate, an arrangement more common in Pimenta .

Pimenta cainitoides occurs from East Cuba to the Dominican Republic, the type locality of Myrcia majaguitana . Specimens named as both taxa share: dense reddish-brown indument on the twigs and abaxial leaf surface; leaf shape, size and a coriaceous texture; and tetramerous flowers ( Landrum 1986). Based on these features, M. majaguitana is here considered as a synonym of P. cainitoides .
