3.36. Myrcia guavira Parodi (1879: 182) View in CoL . Type:— PARAGUAY. Igatimi (Canindeyú, Villa Ygatimi), “in silva non raro”, Parodi s.n. (not found).
The type specimen was declared by Parodi to have been lost during the Paraguayan war of 1864–1870 (see 3.35 above for details). Myrcia guavira is described as a large tree with shortly petiolate leaves that are sub obovate, with the apex sub-attenuate, with few, oblique lateral veins. The flowers are described as pentamerous with c. 100 stamens and the ovary with 8(–10?) locules with 8–10 ovules per locule and the style as bearing a disciform stigma. The fruits are described as yellow with a green, erect fruiting calyx and embryos with connate cotyledons. All these characters agree very well with Campomanesis xanthocarpa ( Martius 1843: 31) O. Berg (1857 –1859: 451) ( Landrum 1986, Lima et al. 2011). Also, the vernacular Guarani name Guavira is currently applied to C. xanthocarpa by indigenous communities of Mbyá-Guaraní in Paraguay ( Dujak et al. 2015) and this species is known to occur in Villa Ygatimi. As in the previous species, information and specimens available are not enough for a formal synonymization of M. guavira under C. xanthocarpa .
