Mychocerinus oahuanus sp. n.
( Figs 305–311 View FIGURES 305–311 )
Type material examined. Holotype (Hawaiian Islands): ♂, “ Hawaii: Oahu / 2 km NE Makiki, / Makiki Forest Trail / 26 December 1981 / W. E. Steiner ” ( USNM) . Paratype: ♀, same data as for holotype ( USNM) .
Diagnosis. Body nearly circular, dark brown with lighter pronotum and appendages, but with antennal clubs infuscate; dorsal pubescence erect and relatively dense; pronotum strongly narrowing from base; large punctures on pronotal disc distributed mainly just behind eyes and a few also on anteromedian area; elytral punctures barely discernible on anteromedian adsutural region and fine but noticeable on sides, partly arranged in poorly marked longitudinal rows in which punctures are sparse, separated by spaces as wide as 3‒4 × their diameters; lateral longi- tudinal carinae of mesoventral plate forming an angle of ~30 degrees with longitudinal body axis; parameres stout, ~2.5 times as long as broad, with setae distributed from their bases.
Description. BL 0.93–0.95 mm; BL/EW 1.36–1.37. Body nearly circular ( Figs 305–307 View FIGURES 305–311 ) and in lateral view weakly convex ( Fig. 308 View FIGURES 305–311 ), with highest site situated near middle of elytra; pigmentation dark brown with pronotum and appendages distinctly lighter, but antennal club darkened; dorsum covered with short yellowish recumbent and relatively short setae; clypeus with very fine and indistinct microreticulation, semi-glossy, reticulation on remaining body parts indistinct.
Head 0.25 mm wide; frons and vertex weakly convex, distinct punctures unevenly distributed mainly on median region of vertex, where they are dense but shallow, separated by spaces subequal to their diameters; clypeus semiglossy; eyes large, strongly convex, coarsely faceted.
Pronotum ( Figs 305‒306 View FIGURES 305–311 ) strongly transverse, broadest at base; PL 0.20 mm, PW 0.50–0.53 mm, PL/PW 0.38– 0.40; lateral margins weakly rounded in posterior half, in anterior region strongly converging anterad and nearly straight, with a rounded angle marked between posterior and anterior portions; lateral carinae narrow but distinct; anterior pronotal margin lacking marginal line. Punctures on disc mostly fine and inconspicuous except for a few larger punctures scattered in anteromedian region, with several concentrated just behind each eye.
Prosternum ( Fig. 307 View FIGURES 305–311 ) with indistinct microreticulation and with fine, inconspicuous setiferous punctures; prosternal carinae about as long as 3/4 of prosternum, nearly straight and indistinctly converging anterad; notosternal carinae strongly curved outwards and not reaching anterior prosternal margin, the latter with distinct marginal carina and relatively shallowly emarginate.
Elytra ( Figs 305–306 View FIGURES 305–311 ) together oval, with strongly rounded sides, broadest near anterior third, EL 0.65–0.68 mm, EW 0.68–0.70 mm, EL/EW 0.96. Humerus with distinct callus; elytra sparsely and finely punctate, punctures on large anteromedian adsutural region very small and shallow, barely discernible, those on side of each elytron distinctly larger and sharply marked, but still unremarkable, partly arranged in irregular, not very distinct longitudinal rows, in which punctures are sparse, separated by spaces as wide as 3‒4 × their diameters.
Hind wings fully developed.
Mesoventral plate ( Fig. 309 View FIGURES 305–311 ) with lateral longitudinal carinae forming an angle of ~30 degree with longitudinal body axis, and junction with metaventral femoral line is rounded; anterior margin of mesoventral plate nearly straight.
Metaventrite ( Fig. 309 View FIGURES 305–311 ) with only a few large and distinct punctures distributed on sides; median region with fine, inconspicuous setiferous punctures. Discrimen externally poorly marked.
Aedeagus ( Figs 310–311 View FIGURES 305–311 ) 0.18 mm long, moderately slender; penis in lateral view weakly curved in sub-basal region; tegmen slender, parallel-sided with relatively slender, subtriangular parameres which are about ~2.5 times as long as broad and each bears 4 long setae distributed from base to apex.
Distribution. Hawaiian Islands.
Etymology. Topotypical, after the island of Oahu.
Remarks. Murmidius oahuanus is most similar to M. caledonicus ; see remarks for the latter species.
