Mormidea Amyot & Serville, 1843 View in CoL View at ENA
This is a relatively large genus, currently with 34 species distributed throughout the Western Hemisphere. But only a single species, Mormidea lugens , is widespread in the United States; there are three other species that extend into the southern portions of the U.S. The subgenus Melanochila Stål was erected to hold those species that have a pale transverse callus on the disk of the pronotum. This includes our species Mormidea lugens and several unrelated South American species. The genus Mormidea was reviewed, including keys to the species, by Rolston (1978a).
