Remarks: The species has a multispiral protoconch and orthocline axial ribs on the teleoconch (on the body whorl 7–8 ribs). The spiral sculpture on the teleoconch whorls consists of incised striae only. In adult specimens the labrum is thickened. M. costata can easily be distinguished from other Mangelia species with similar shell shape by its incised (grooved) spirals between axial ribs on teleoconch whorls. In some studies carried out in the past, the junior name Mangelia coarctata ( Forbes 1840) has occasionally been used instead of Mangelia costata ( Pennant, 1777) (see the relevant note in WoRMS (WoRMS Editorial Board 2020).

Distribution: Eastern Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea ( Gofas et al. 2011). Turkish coasts: Levantine Sea, Aegean Sea and Sea of Marmara (Özt̹rk et al. 2014).
