Mallophora cruralis Rondani, 1863 View in CoL

ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1863: 46.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ De Mérida de Yucatan [Merida, Yucatan ( Mexico)]” ( Macquart 1846: 204) [type locality for Atomosia tibialis Macquart, 1846 ].

TYPE MATERIAL: see Remarks.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species ( Martin & Papavero 1970: 73); junior synonym of Mallophora nigrifemorata Macquart, 1838 View in CoL ( Artigas & Angulo 1980: 82, Papavero 2009: 40).

REMARKS: Rondani (1863: 46) moved Atomosia tibialis Macquart, 1846 to the genus Mallophora Macquart, 1834 and proposed the new replacement name Mallophora cruralis for Mallophora tibialis ( Macquart, 1846) , preoccupied by Macquart (1838a: 89). Costa (1866: 36) listed a single MZUN specimen numbered “797”. The type material for Mallophora cruralis will be the same as for the name it was proposed to replace, i. e., Atomosia tibialis . The holotype of this latter species is preserved in the OUMNH (Oxford University Museum of Natural History 2020). Under the name Mallophora cruralis there is a (non-type) female in the MZUN (Box Asilidei A05, 05).
