Lucanus chengyuani Wang & Ko, 2018 View in CoL ( Figs 244 View Figures 244–259 , 276 View Figures 276–307 )
Lucanus chengyuani Wang & Ko, 2018: 257–263 View in CoL , figs 1–29.
Material examined. Holotype (♂) “ Taiwan: Chiayi Co., Alishan , 13. V. 2018, leg. C. Y. Wu. ” [2nd label]: “ Holotype Lucanus chenyuani n. sp. Wang et Ko des. 2018”. [3rd label]: “LCY001. Deposited in Department of Entomology, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan ( NTUE).”
Body length 29. 8 mm (♂); ♀ unknown (Wang & Ko, 2018).
Descriptions. Male. Body black; width of head, including mandibles, subequal to that of pronotum and elytra. Head black; mandibles incurved along apical 1/3; major inner mandibular tooth undeveloped, mandibles each with 5–6 small inner mandibular teeth; apical mandibular fork weakly developed, narrowly open anteriorly; upper and lower branches of apical fork subequal in length; lateral ridges of head subparallel, weakly rounded, evenly convex apically; clypeolabrum weakly developed, trapezoidal, labrum triangular, single-pointed at middle. Pronotum brownish or black, concolorous with head; straight at apex and basal 1/3, weakly rounded at middle; subequal in width to that of head and mandibles; prothoracic tibiae brownish, each bearing five weakly developed spines from apex to midlength; mesothoracic tibiae black, each bearing 2–4 spines at midlength; metathoracic tibiae bright yellowish with black apex, each bearing two significant spines along basal 1/3. Elytra black; oval, widest at apical 1/3, strongly narrowing along basal 1/3. Genitalia. Basal piece usually well defined, 0.4× length of entire aedeagus; apical flagellum enlarged, flagellum 0.4× length of aedeagus; aedeagus slender, incurved along basal 1/3, triangular distally.
Female. Unknown.
Distribution. China (Taiwan) (Wang & Ko, 2018).
Phenology. According to Wang and Ko (2018), adult specimens of L. chengyuani were collected from mid-May.
Natural History. Adult flight apparently takes place during mid-May. Adults exhibit a diurnal flight behavior associated with open areas along forests with some miscellaneous trees and herbaceous plants. Based on descriptions given by Wang and Ko (2018), the minor body sizes of L. chengyuani likely exhibit an evolutionary consequence of feeding on the lower nutritional food due to its habitat.
Discussion. The position of L. chengyuani needs further study. As Wang and Ko (2018) observed, when attempting to associate Lucanus species into related species groups, morphological characters of females should also be considered. They stated: “Before more material is need of other related Lucanus species from (mainland) China and Indo-China for further molecular analyses….” In this study and for the present, L. chengyuani is considered a species of the Lucanus fortunei group. Additional taxonomic study of this species is needed, including discovery of females and molecular study for species delimitations.
