Linogeraeus urbanus (Boheman)

( Figs. 8 View Figs , 36–38 View Figs , 77 View Figs )

Centrinus urbanus Boheman 1859:138 . Type material in NHRS; not examined. Brachygeraeus urbanus ; Hustache (1938).

Linogeraeus urbanus ; Kuschel (1983).

Lepidobaris metasternalis Lea 1927:371 View in CoL . Synonymy by Kuschel (1983:38).

Recognition. Male L. urbanus have a thick, distinctively curved rostrum ( Fig. 38 View Figs ), a prosternal cushion of plumose scales, and a procoxal process ( Fig. 8 View Figs ). Female specimens are much less conspicuous and can be distinguished from L. capillatus View in CoL , the only other similar species in the United States, by the noticeably flat dorsal surface ( Fig. 36 View Figs ). The size range is 2.9–4.1 mm.

Distribution. The species occurs naturally in Uruguay and the adjacent part of Argentina. It is adventive in Australia (Zimmerman 1985; May 1994), New Zealand (May 1984), and the United States ( Fig. 77 View Figs ).

Type locality. Buenos Aires, Argentina .

Material examined. United States: Florida , 1945, 1970 ( USNM 2 About USNM ) , Georgia, 1938 ( USNM 1 About USNM ) , North Carolina, 1934 ( USNM 1 About USNM ) , South Carolina, 1925 ( USNM 1 About USNM ) . Argentina ( CWOB 60 , USNM 30 About USNM ) , Australia ( USNM 1 About USNM ) , Uruguay ( CWOB 79 , USNM 7 About USNM ). Total 182 specimens .

Temporal occurrence. Late May and June [4 dates], September [1 date].

Plant associations. Poaceae : reared from stolon of P. distichum (May 1984) ; Z. mays (H. L. Parker, observation; Link, interception).

Biology. May (1984) made the following observations in New Zealand, where the species was introduced: ‘‘Oviposition and hatching occur throughout summer. Larval development continues during winter, leading to adult emergence in spring and early summer. There is only one generation a year. Fully fed larvae rest within the stolons for up to six months before pupating in the soil.’’

Larval description. May (1984, 1994)

Note. Linogeraeus urbanus is newly recorded for the United States. The first specimen was collected in Columbia, South Carolina in 1925. At about the same time, it was discovered in Australia and described by Lea (1927), as Lepidobaris metasternalis . From there, it was dispersed to New Zealand in the 1970s and studied by May (1984). In the United States, single specimens were collected in four southeastern states ( Fig. 77 View Figs ), the last time in 1970, and were examined by R. Warner, USDA. Kuschel (1983) resolved the identity of this species in Australia and New Zealand and pointed out its origin. Linogeraeus urbanus is native to Uruguay and the adjacent parts of Argentina.
