Note: See review by Jørgensen & al. (in Bot. J. Linn. Soc. 115: 349, 380. 1994), who show that the type belongs to Cladonia portentosa (Dufour) Coem. As C. sylvatica (L.) Hoffm. had already fallen out of use, these authors (in Taxon 43: 648. 1994) successfully proposed the name for rejection.
