Type material examined: Holotype ♂: ‘ TAIWAN Hualien | Hsien, Taroko N.P. | Duodyatunshan | 2650m 8.V.1990 | A. Smetana [T46]’ <rectangular label, printed>, ‘ HOLOTYPE | Lesteva (s.str.) | rufopunctata | taiwanica | Shavrin A.V. des. 2015’ <red rectangular label, printed> (cSm).
Paratypes: 1 ♂, 1 ♀: same data as the holotype (cSm, 1 male—CSh). All paratypes with my additional label: ‘ PARATYPE | Lesteva (s.str.) | rufopunctata | taiwanica | Shavrin A.V. des. 2015’ <red rectangular label, printed>.
Description. Measurements (n=3): WH: 0.70–0.72; LH: 0.45–0.47; LA: 1.76 (holotype); LE: 0.25; LT: 0.11; LP: 0.70–0.75; WPMax: 0.82–0.87; WPMin: 0.62–0.65; LEl: 1.32–1.35; WE: 1.38–1.42; WA: 1.25−1.32; LAed: 1.20; TL: 3.70–3.80 (holotype).
In general appearance similar to L. rufopunctata rufopunctata Rougemont, 2000 . Body dark brown to black; each elytron with yellow irregular roundish spot in middle; legs and antennae brown; ocelli, mouthparts, base of antennomeres I–III and tarsi yellow. Habitus as in Fig. 2 View FIGURES 1 – 2 . Measurements of antennomeres (length/width, holotype): I: 0.22 × 0.10; II– III: 0.15 × 0.05; IV: 0.14× 0.05; V–VI: 0.15 × 0.05; VII–VIII: 0.16 × 0.05; IX 0.15 × 0.07; X: 0.13 × 0.07; XI: 0.20 × 0.07. Pronotum 1.1 times wider than head. Elytra 1.8 times longer than pronotum.
Male. Aedeagus ( Fig 5 View FIGURES 5 – 6 ) very long, with median lobe gradually narrowing towards apex; parameres moderately wide, reaching apex of aedeagus; endophallus with moderately long paired parallel structures, with two small slightly curved sclerites in apical part. Aedeagus laterally as in Fig. 6 View FIGURES 5 – 6 .
Comparative notes. Male and female genital characters of the new subspecies as in L. r. rufopunctata , but body size, some proportions of the forebody and coloration differ from the type form from the mainland China (Zhejiang (Moganshan, Hangzhou), Jiangsu (Nanjing), Beijing (Panshan, Yingtaogou); for details see Rougemont 2000) as follows: body smaller ( L. r. rufopunctata – from 4.40 to 5.00 mm), coloration much paler (body of L. r. rufopunctata black, legs fuscous black), pronotum slightly wider, elytra slightly wider and shorter. The length of the aedeagus of the larger-body L. r. rufopunctata is the same (1.20 mm) as the new subspecies (one-third shorter in length of body!). The median lobe of the aedeagus of L. r. taiwanica subsp. n. is somewhat wider, the apex of the aedeagus is slightly narrower, and the apical paired sclerites of the endophallus are slightly longer and not curved compared to that of L. r. rufopunctata .
Etymology. The new subspecies is named after Taiwan where the type series was collected.
Bionomics. Specimens taken by submerging various edge vegetation into water of a small pond in coniferous forest (Smetana, pers. comm.).
