Justicia salsoloides T. Anderson (1867: 514)

Type (Lectotype designated here):— INDIA, Mysore and Carnatic, s.d., G.Thomson 126 ( K 000884125, isolectotypes K 000884124, CAL 0000020253) Fig. 1.

Notes:— Justicia salsoloides was described by Anderson (1867) based on specimens collected from Mysore and Carnatic region. Two collections ( G. Thomson and Wight) were mentioned in the protologue, but no holotype was designated. Thus they are syntypes according to Art. 9.5 of the ICN ( McNeill et al., 2012). It is clear from the introduction part of protologue, that the specimens consulted by Anderson were deposited either in CAL or in K. After an exhaustive search, three sheets at K ( K 000884124, K 000884125, K 000884126) and one at CAL ( CAL 0000020253) were traced. Of these, three sheets collected by Thomson (two in K and one at CAL) bears a label annotated with the collection locality “ Mysore and Carnatic region ” in Anderson’s own handwriting. But Wight’s sheet ( K 000884126) lacking the above annotation instead it is written as “ Peninsula Indiae Orientalis ”. However, two of Thomson’s materials at K ( K 000884124, K 000884125) also bear an additional label indicating the collection numbers (Madras col. 131 & Madras col. 136) in same handwriting. Of these, the specimen bearing collection number 131 ( K 000884125) is well preserved and matches well with the description provided in the protologue. Besides, a fully opened corolla has also found mounted on the sheet. Therefore, K 000884125 is designated here as lectotype according to Art. 9.2, 9.11 & 9.12 of the ICN ( McNeill et al., 2012).
