Meissner (1869) described two varieties of Jacquemontia grandiflora , but the typical variety was subsequently recognized as a synonym of J. ferruginea Choisy by Hallier (1899). We agree with Hallier in this but the other variety [i.e., J. grandiflora var. glabrescens ] is here raised to specific status. The “ glabrescens ” epithet is maintained in reference to the glabrescent leaves and sepals.
Three species can be morphologically confused with Jacquemontia glabrescens namely J. ferruginea , J. cataractae Krapovickas (2009: 59) and Jacquemontia pentanthos ( Jacquin 1791: 210) G. Don (1838: 283) ( Table 2). Jacquemontia ferruginea , a common species in Southeast Brazil, is distinguished by the leaf apices that are obtuse to acute in J. ferruginea versus acuminate in J. glabrescens and by the sepals that are pubescent in the former versus glabrous to glabrescent in the latter. The sepals of J. ferruginea are also usually smaller (outer sepals 7–11 × 2.5–5 mm versus 9–13 x 4.5–6 mm in J. glabrescens ). The second species, J. cataractae is distinguished by the small (7–7.5 mm long), lanceolate rather than rhombic to narrowly ovate outer sepals, and by the glabrous rather than villous pedicels. Jacquemontia pentanthos is distinguished from J. glabrescens by its subequal, linear to lanceolate bracteoles and the smaller outer sepals (4–8 mm long—the length in flower) that are prominently nerved and accrescent in fruit (a characteristic not observed in J. glabrescens and related species).
Jacquemontia glabrescens is a Brazilian endemic that is found in the states of Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Paraná, usually inhabiting forest edges in Montane Ombrophylous Dense Forest and Semideciduous Forests.
One of the isotypes deposited in BR is here selected as the lectotype of Jacquemontia glabrescens since the Von Martius collection, known as “Herbarium Martii”, is deposited in BR. This collection contains several types described by authors of the “ Flora Brasiliensis ”, and material of the Brazilian collectors such as Regnell (Bömmer 1871).
