Impatiens glandulosocalycina Y.Y. Cong, G.W. Hu & T. Hu , sp. nov. ( Figures 1 View FIGURE 1 & 2 View FIGURE 2 )
Type: — China, Yunnan Province, Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture , Yingjiang County, Xima Township , along a stream, 24°41′11.68″N, 97°44′58.60″E, 1791 m a.s.l., 12 Oct. 2022, Yi-Yan Cong & Tian Hu, YJ -2022-3 ( holotype: HNNU!; isotypes: HNNU!, HIB!). The distribution of collection sites is illustrated in Figure 3 View FIGURE 3 GoogleMaps .
Diagnosis: — Impatiens glandulosocalycina is similar to I. aquatilis and I. uliginosa Franchet (1886: 448) , but can be distinguished by its sparsely setose stem, ovate-lanceolate bracts, broadly ovate lateral sepals, broadly reniform dorsal petal with a retuse apex, clawed lateral united petals, and deeply saccate lower sepal with a shorter spur ( Figures 2 View FIGURE 2 & 4 View FIGURE 4 ).
Description: — Plant annual, 40–60 cm tall. Stem erect in upper part, prostrate basally, sparsely setose. Leaves alternate, crowded at upper part of stem; petiole 2–19 mm long, with 2 globose glands at base; lamina lanceolate or obovatelanceolate, 5.9–8.5 × 1.1–2.8 cm, glabrous, apex acuminate, base cuneate, margin crenate, setose between teeth, lateral veins 8–10 pairs. Inflorescences racemose, 6–12-flowered; peduncles 4.5–8 cm long, slender and glabrous. Pedicels 1.2–1.7 cm long, with a bract at base; bracts membranous, ovate-lanceolate, 4.1–5.4 × 1.1–1.4 mm, apex glandular-aristate, 1.5–2.2 mm long, caducous. Flowers pale pink, 3.2–4.8 cm deep; lateral sepals 2, broadly ovate, purple, 6–9 × 2–3 mm, apex glandular-aristate, 2.1–3.7 mm long. Lower sepal deeply saccate, 2.2–2.7 cm deep excluding spur, 1.1– 1.5 cm wide, mouth oblique, tip aristate, base gradually narrowed into an incurved spur, spur 5–8 mm long; dorsal petal broadly reniform, 0.7–0.9 × 1–1.3 cm, abaxial midvein broadly cristate, apex retuse; lateral united petals clawed, 2- lobed, basal lobes ovate-oblong, 1–1.5 × 0.5–0.8 cm, distal lobes long lanceolate, 1.5–2 × 0.5–0.7 cm, apex acuminate, auricle inflexed. Stamens five, 4.3–5.1 mm long, filaments linear, free; anthers elliptic, joined into a ring surrounding ovary apex, apex obtuse. Ovary superior, 5-carpellate, 1.1–1.4 mm long, fusiform, apex slightly acuminate. Fruit a fleshy capsule, linear, 2.4–2.9 cm long, apex acuminate. Seeds ovate-orbicular, dark brown, ca. 1 mm in diam.
Phenology: —Flowering and fruiting from August to November.
Etymology: —The specific epithet glandulosocalycina refers to the lateral sepals having glandular-aristate apex. The Chinese name is given as “腺萼凤仙花”.
Distribution and ecology: — Impatiens glandulosocalycina is only known from Yingjiang County in western Yunnan Province, China, where it grows along stream banks in moist, shaded habitats. To date, this new taxon has only been recorded at the type locality.
Conservation status: —More than six populations have been found at altitudes of 1258–1814 m, with a large number of individuals. Therefore, we propose assigning the species a preliminary conservation status of Least Concern (LC), following the guidelines of the IUCN Standards and Petitions Subcommittee (2022).
