3.7. Hyptis lagenaria A. St. View in CoL -Hil. ex Bentham (1833: 98). Fig. 13 View FIGURE 13

Mesosphaerum lagenarium (A.St.-Hil. ex Benth.) Kuntze (1891: 526). Type (lectotype designated here):— BRAZIL. Sine loc., 1816-21, A. de Saint Hilaire s.n. ( P 721118 !; isolectotype P 721119 !) .

Perennial herbs, up to 1 m high, stems pilose with hispid antrorse hairs and pedicellate glandular hairs. Leaves with a petiole, 0.5–2.5 cm long, ovate- triangular blade, 2.5–8 × 1.5–4 cm, acute apex, acute attenuate base, adaxial surface strigose, abaxial surface strigose over nervation, irregularly biserrate-dentate margin. Capitula 0.5–1 cm diam., many-flowered, solitary, axillary to superior leaves, peduncle 1–2 cm long. Bracteoles 5–6 mm long, linear and filiform, glabrous. Calyx 3 mm up to 6 mm in fruit, mid-tube deflexed in fruit, exterior pilose with some glandular hairs, interior with a dense band of thick and short hairs; teeth 0.6–1.2 mm long, sub-equal, aristate. Corolla white or lilac color, 3–3.5 mm long. Nutlets narrow obovoid, 1.2 mm long, brown, smooth.

Remarks: — Bentham (1833) described many of his new taxa based on collections made by A.F.C.P. de Saint-Hilaire, that are housed at Herb. P ( Stafleu & Cowan 1976). In the case of Hyptis lagenaria more than one sheet from the collection is found at Herb. P, so a lectotype is designated, following Arts. 8 and 9 of ICN ( McNeill et al. 2012; McNeill 2014). Hyptis recurvata Poiteau (1806: 467) is primarily a tropical species that grows in damp places and is often more or less weedy. R.M. Harley (pers. comm.) mentions a collection of this species from Argentina, Corrientes province (Krapovickas et al. 23767, housed at BAB, CTES, K and LIL). However the specimen looks more like H. lagenaria . The presence of H. recurvata in Argentina is, for the moment, not demonstrated.

Distribution and habitat: — Hyptis lagenaria is found in southern Brazil and northeastern Argentina in the province of Misiones. It grows between 500–1000 m elevation, in dry fields and disturbed land.
