Holotype: ZMA 5679, according to Van Tuijl (1995). Type locality: Lorentz River , Papua Province, Indonesia .
This name is currently synonymised with L. genimaculata . However re-examination of the holotype, and collection of fresh material in the vicinity of the type locality, indicate that this species is distinct from L. genimaculata and that the name L. papua should be resurrected from its synonymy. The Lorentz River population is clearly distinguished from L. genimaculata by its much smaller size, adult males 30.1–33.6 mm SVL (n = 8, holotype = 30.5 mm). A re-description of this species is in preparation but, here, we refrain from resurrecting the name because it is currently preoccupied by Nyctimystes [= Litoria ] papua (Boulenger) , due to the synonymy of Nyctimystes within Litoria ( Frost et al. 2006) .
