Haplogryllacris latifrons (Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1888) View in CoL
Material examined. India, leg. Stevens— 1 male (holotype of H. latifrons ) (Wien NHMW) .
Description. Large species. Head: Face rather large, distinctly wider than pronotum, robust; frons ovoid, forehead shagreened; fastigium verticis distinctly wider than scapus, separated by a weak suture from fastigium frontis; ocelli distinct, especially median ocellus; subocular furrows distinct ( Fig. 66G View FIGURE 66 ).
Wings surpassing hind knees and reaching about mid-length of stretched hind tibiae ( Fig. 66F View FIGURE 66 ). Tegmen: Radius with two branches, both forked near tip; media anterior free from base, near end of basal third dividing into MA and MP and shortly after MP divides again into two branches in left tegmen, in right tegmen it remains undivided; cubitus anterior and cubitus posterior both single branched, free throughout; with 4 anal veins, fourth incomplete.
Legs: Fore coxa with a spine at fore margin; fore and mid femora unarmed; fore and mid tibiae with four pairs of large ventral spines and one pair of smaller ventral spurs; hind femur with 7 external and 2–3 internal spines on ventral margins; hind tibia with spaced spines on both dorsal margins, ventral margins with one pre-apical spine; with 3 apical spurs on both sides.
Coloration. General color medium brown, posterior margin of pronotum and fastigium verticis black. Face medium brown; fastigium verticis and fastigium frontis black, gradually changing downwards to dark brown; median ocellus bright yellow; mandibles dark brown at base, gradually changing to black at tip. Tegmen semitransparent yellow, along fore and hind margins whitish; veins yellow, cross-veins brown; hind wing semitransparent with brownish veins; cross veins yellowish with a very fine dark band on both sides.
Male. Eighth abdominal tergite distinctly prolonged and globular. Ninth abdominal tergite globular, apical margin truncate, in middle with a pair of short, stout, blunt teeth. Tenth abdominal tergite narrow band-shaped, broadly interrupted in middle. Subgenital plate almost semi-circular with sloping lateral margins, apical margin in middle truncate; styli inserted at apico-lateral angles ( Fig. 67D View FIGURE 67 ).
Measurements after Brunner 1888 (1 male).—body w/o wings: 32; pronotum: 8.2; tegmen: 37; hind femur: 18; tegmen width: 12.3 mm.
Discussion. Karny (1927) writes: "[ G. verticalis ] from Brazil in Sommers collection. ... Sommers collection was sold to Brunner v. W. (now Museum Vienna). The corresponding specimen is however not in Vienna and was obviously never seen by Brunner as he did not treat it as a valid species. ... The type [of G. verticalis ] must be regarded as lost; ... the type locality ( Brazil) is obviously wrong, as in South America there are no species that would agree with the original description. According to Burmeister's description G. verticalis should be identical with G. latifrons Brunner ; the latter should thus become a synonym of G. verticalis .“ (translated from German).
