21. Glyphodesmis rhombica (Cleve) Simonsen ( Figs 35–37 View FIGURES 29–38 )
Basionym: Fragilaria rhombica Cleve.
Synonym: Glyphodesmis acus A. Mann ; Fragilaria inflata var. rhombica Meister.
Type locality: Bali Sound , Indonesia
Reference: Simonsen 1974, p. 35, pl. 23, fig. 1; Fryxell & Miller 1978, p. 120, figs 11–19.
Morphometrics: Valves 35–43 (42–68) μm long, 8.5–10 (10–12) μm wide, transapical striae 15–16 (16–17) in 10 μm, and puncta on a stria 18 in 10 μm.
Remarks: This taxon is characterized by having a nodule in the central area. Fryxell & Miller (1978) questioned that Simonsen (1974) considered Glyphodesmis rhombica and G. acus to be the same species, but here, in the Simonsen’s view, they are regarded as the same species. This species was reported in only a few cases, Jolo of the southwestern Philippines ( Mann 1925) and Sabang of northern Sumatra ( Meister 1932) as type localities of the synonyms, in the coast of Somalia ( Simonsen 1974) and the eastern Australia ( Foged 1978). It has been only observed a few times in Seogwipo coast, and this is a new report to South Korea.
