Etymology:—Named in honour of the mycologist Dr. E.H.C. McKenzie, in recognition of his contribution to the study of hyphomycetes.

Holotype: MFLU 16–2139 View Materials

Saprobic on branch of Clematis vitalba ( Ranunculaceae ). Sexual morph: Undetermined. Asexual morph: Hyphomycetes. Colonies on the natural substratum effuse, hairy, black. Mycelium immersed, composed of septate, branched, smooth hyphae. Conidiophores 91–114 μm long × 8.5–11 μm wide (x = 111 μm × 9.8 μm, n = 30), macronematous, mononematous, dark brown, septate, unbranched, thick-walled, smooth, erect, paler towards the apex, cylindrical, with 7–9 transverse eusepta. Conidiogenous cells enteroblastic, percurrently proliferating, cylindrical, pale brown to dark brown, thin-walled, smooth. Conidia 38–40 μm long × 12–15 μm wide (x = 40 μm × 14 μm, n = 30), acrogenous, straight or curved, fusiform to ellipsoidal, with 7 transverse eusepta, constricted at the septa, pale brown to dark brown, light colored and obtuse at the apex, echinulate, with broadly truncate at the base. Conidial secession rhexolytic.

Cultural characteristics: —Conidia germinating on PDA within 14 hours at 16 ºC, with germ tubes produced from both ends. Colonies reaching 75 mm diam. after 6 weeks at 25 ºC, medium dense, circular with mycelium semi-immersed to superficial, regular, flat, slightly raised, with undulate edge, slightly rough on surface, cottony, grayish brown, cream at the margin; reverse, orange-brown to reddish brown.

Material examined: — ITALY, Forlì-Cesena Province, Passo la Calla—Santa Sofia, on dead branch of Clematis vitalba ( Ranunculaceae ), 25January 2014, E. Camporesi, IT1669 ( MFLU 16-2139, holotype!), ex-type living culture, MFLUCC 14-0434, KUMCC 16-0031 (isotype in HKAS, as HKAS 95019).

Notes: — Fusiconidium mackenziei is described based on a collection on dead branch of Clematis vitalba from Italy and represents the type species of genus Fusiconidium . Fusiconidium mackenziei is characterized by thick-walled, fusiform 7-euseptate, echinulate conidia, enteroblastic conidiogenous cells with percurrent extensions, subhyaline at the apex and rhexolytic conidial secession. In the phylogenetic analysis based on combined LSU, SSU, TEF 1-α and RPB2 gene, F.mackenziei and F. aquaticum . formed an independent and distinct lineage within the Melanommataceae .
