TYPE LOCALITY: India, Bengal, Sunderbans .
DISTRIBUTION: Lower Amur (E. Siberia) through Korea and N.E. China and most of the Oriental region west to Baluchistan, and southeast to Taiwan; Philippine Isis., Java, Bali, and Borneo.
COMMENT: Includes euptilura from E. Siberia; see Corbet, 1978:184; but also see Gromov and Baranova, 1981:285, who listed euptilura as a distinct species. Includes minuta; see Chasen, 1940:108. See Heptner, 1971, Zool. Zh., 50: 1720, for discussion of systematics. Subspecies extremely variable (AHS).
PROTECTED STATUS: CITES - Appendix II as Felidae . CITES - Appendix I and U.S. ESA - Endangered as F. b. bengalensis subspecies only.
