Note:— Polygonum pliocaenicum Givulescu & Ţicleanu (1978: 47) was described on the basis of fossil foliage from the Upper Miocene (Pannonian G / H) of Romania. Although Dorofeev (1966: 204) earlier published “ Polygonum . pliocenicum ” (with a slightly different spelling; cfr.Art. 53.4), the Givulescu & Ţicleanu’s name is not a later homonym and illegitimate (Art. 53.4), since Dorofeev (l.c.) did not designate the holotype, so making his name as not validly published (Art. 40.1) (see IFPNI: http://fossilplants.info/names/ 01E24836-0986-4AAD-9C20-7E70C5D39620). The proposed transfer of the fossils to Aristolochia Linnaeus (1753: 960) by Knobloch (1998: 12) is not supported by leaf morphology. Moreover, according to Art. 53.1 the proposed combination, i.e. A. pliocaenica (Givulescu & Ţicleanu) Knobloch (1998: 12) is a later homonym and illegitimate name of A. pliocaenica Kinkelin (in Engelhardt & Kinkelin 1908: 226). Since P. pliocaenicum Givulescu & Ţicleanu , based on fossil foliage of Fallopia -type, belongs to the genus Fallopia , a new combination is here proposed.
