Exorista caudata Rondani, 1859 View in CoL
ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1859b: 121 (key), 139 (description).
TYPE LOCALITY: “ in collibus agri parmensis [ Parmese hills ( Italy)]” .
TYPE MATERIAL: 2 ♀♀, syntypes (covered with mold) ( MZUF: Box 13): Thrycolyga Rndn. / caudata Rnd. / 666; 1 ♀, syntype ( MSNPV: Box 97): Exorista caudata Rnd. , 384, Parma; 1 ♀, syntype ( MZUB: Box 325): 22 47 / Exorista caudata Rond. , ex a. parmensi / caudata Rndn ♀ Parma.
CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Phryxe caudata ( Herting & Dely-Draskovits 1993: 193, Pape et al. 1995: 20, Cerretti 2010: 197, O’Hara et al. 2020: 346).
REMARKS: Rondani (1859b: 139) described Exorista caudata from just the female sex, without specifying the exact number of specimens and not giving a range of lengths: “ Foeminam non raro legi… Mas ignotus [I not rarely collected the female… The male is unknown]”. We found four female syntypes in this study. An additional two MZUF specimens numbered “666” are not included in the type series: a male because of its sex, and a female because its label is yellowish rather than the greenish color of Rondani’s original handwritten ones and is in a lower row in the Box, for which reason we treat it to be a subsequent addition.
