EOO: 14,343.680 km ². AOO: 40 km ². Evaluation of IUCN: Near Threatened.
Eugenia vesca is distributed in southeastern Mexico (Chiapas) and Guatemala ( WCSP 2020). The estimated extent of occurrence (EOO) falls within the Vulnerable category under the criterion B, whilst the area of occupancy (AOO) would likely exceed the thresholds of Endangered category if the remaining habitat available is taken in account. The species biome is the Humid Tropical Forest from 200 to 400 m elev. There are only six to seven known locations, based on 18 records, including two records in the region known as “Selva Lacandona”. The habitat is under low impact of human activities within the region, and there are records in areas of environmental protection such as the “Reserva de la Biosfera Montes Azules”, and the “Reserva de la Biosfera Lacan-tum”, and World heritage monuments like Bonanpak, Yaxchilán and Chan-Kin. The threats that could affect the species are under the control of several governmental organizations that promote the protection of the region ( CONABIO 2018, INE-SEMARNAP 2000a). In the same way, in the part of the distribution in Guatemala, the species is protected in the Sierra del Lacandon National Park, which is a protected area with measures for its protection and maintenance. Considering that this species is dependent on protected area and control of threatening activities, it is assessed as Near Threatened (NT) regarding its distribution and number of locations, meeting the criteria B1a+B2a.
