≡ Eugenia gracilis Beddome (1864: 46) View in CoL , nom. illeg., non Berg (1857: 222). ≡ Eugenia mooniana Wight (1841: 13) var. gracilis (Bedd.) Duthie (1879: 505) View in CoL . ≡ Eugenia cotinifolia Jacquin (1768: 3) var. gracilis (Duthie) Almeida (1988: 265) View in CoL .
Type citation in protologue:—“ A small tree: Anaimalais, banks, 3,000 to 4,000 feet ”.
Lectotype (designated here):— INDIA. Anamalai hills, 4000 ft., s.d., R.H. Beddome 2942 ( BM 011025637 [digital image!]; isolectotype K 001000087 [digital image!]).
Remaining syntype:— INDIA. Anamalai hills, s.d., R.H. Beddome s.n. (K000821521 [digital image!]).
Notes:—In keeping with the practice of those times, Richard Henry Beddome (1830–1911) did not designate the holotype, nor did he mention the name of the herbarium where the specimens were housed. Three herbarium duplicates, collected by Beddome from Anamalai hills are extant for the name Eugenia gracilis Bedd. , two at K (K000821521 and K001000087) and one at BM ( BM 011025637). Of these, the specimen BM011025637 is better preserved as it contains well-developed mature leaves and flowers, and is therefore designated as the lectotype.
