Endotera cyaneana Agassiz , sp. n. ( Figs. 22–25 )

Type material. Holotype ♀, KENYA: Nairobi CIE A6574 ( BMNH). Paratypes (7). 1♀, same data as holotype; 1 bred from domatium of A. drepanolobium , Kenya: Naivasha, 2009; 1 collected at light and 2 netted in the evening, Naivasha; 1♀, Rift Valley, Naivasha, bred from domatium of A. drepanolobium, 2012 ( DJLA), 1♀, Rift Valley, Kajaido North, Masai Lodge, xii.2010, L. Aarvik & D. Agassiz ( NHMO).

Description. Adult. Male ( Figs. 22, 23 ). Head: Ochreous, labial palpus ochreous, segment 3 paler and about half length of segment 2, antenna dark fuscous with pale annulations. Collar turqoise. Thorax: Dorsum and tegulae fuscous, notum with a blue sheen anteriorly and a black spot behind middle. Wingspan 14–20 mm. Forewing fuscous, irrorate cream, reddish towards costa which has a series of cream strigulae; ocellus with three black bars and a further one nearer costa, edged before and after metallic grey; termen as ground colour of wing, terminal cilia reddish. Hindwing dark fuscous, much paler towards base, cilia cream, reddish near apex, with a fuscous line throughout. Underside of forewing dark fuscous but with costa cream towards apex and along termen. Abdomen: Fuscous with pale scales on the edge of each segment. Genitalia ( Fig. 24 ) Uncus rounded, valva subrectangular with rounded corners and a strong crease beneath apex, aedeagus detachable with apical half narrower.

Female. Head and Thorax: Essentially as described for male. Abdomen: Genitalia ( Fig. 25 ) Ostium cupshaped, ductus short and simple, corpus bursae ovate with two slender corniform signa.

Diagnosis. Endotera cyaneana can be distinguished from other species by the turquoise collar and sheen on the anterior part of the thorax.

Distribution. Kenya: Rift Valley Province.

Biology. The larva lives within a domatium of Acacia drepanolobium ; the relationship with ants inhabiting the domatia is not understood.

Etymology. From the cyan colour on collar and thorax.
