Edessa exigusternata sp. n.

( Figs 2 View FIGURE 2 , 6 C–D View FIGURE 6 , 8 B View FIGURE 8 , 9 View FIGURE 9 )

Etymology. Reference to the metasternal process with anterior bifurcation extremely reduced. Exiguus–too small, reduced.

Holotype male. BRAZIL, Rio Grande do Sul: Praia Atlântida , XI–1983, J. Grazia (29°48’09.59” S 50°02’28.20” W) ( MZUSP). GoogleMaps

Measurements. Head length (1.4); head width (2.5); pronotal length (2.5); pronotal width (6.2); width of scutellum at base (5.2); scutellar width (4.0); length of antennal segments (I: 0.7; II: 1.0; III: 1.0; IV and V missing); total length (11.9); abdominal width (7.6).

Diagnose. Pronotum smooth. Corium with light brown punctures. Metasternal process ( Fig. 2 D View FIGURE 2 ) with anterior bifurcation strongly reduced, almost vestigial. Peritreme just surpassing half of the distance between ostiole of the scent gland and lateral margin of the body ( Fig. 8 B View FIGURE 8 ). Evaporatorium with a long and barely raised crest in mesopleuron, actually the bordering sulci emphasize the crest; contiguous margin of meso and metapleuron not raised; metapleuron even without any crest. Spiracles black ( Fig. 2 B View FIGURE 2 ) and trichobothria not placed in a light yellow callus. Antennae and legs spotless.

Male ( Figs 2 A–C View FIGURE 2 ). Superior process of the genital cup reduced to a black line. Ventral part of the paramere with a short globose and a digitiform long lobes, base wider than distal part; digitiform and dorsal lobes distinctly projected posteriorly.

Comments. Female unknown. Edessa exigusternata sp. n. is the most peculiar of the five species with several differences from the other species and was included in this group due to shape of the paramere and superior process of the genital cup.

Distribution ( Fig. 9 View FIGURE 9 ). Brazil: Rio Grande do Sul.
