( Figures 5 View FIGURES 1 – 18 , 45 View FIGURES 42 – 47 , 51 View FIGURES 49 – 54 , 56 View FIGURE 56 , 57–59 View FIGURES 57 – 63 )

Diagnosis. Dashymenia cognata is most similar to Dashymenia colubrina in sharing the following combination of characters: vertex with dark, transverse patch, contiguous with posterior margin of the vertex; lateral margin of the pronotum with broad yellow stripe; scutellum with large, yellow patch apically ( Figs. 5–6 View FIGURES 1 – 18 ); DSS strongly broadened basally, curved apically; AES nearly cylindrical at basal half, strongly twisted and somewhat broadened apically; MES strongly curved, strongly broadened at basal one fourth, remainder of the sclerite nearly cylindrical with its apex sharply pointed; PES composed of two sclerites: one large, hook-shaped, and other smaller and narrowed towards apex ( Figs. 57–58, 60–61 View FIGURES 57 – 63 ). The new species can, however, be distinguished by possessing the larger sclerite of the PES with the swelling posteriorly, and the small sclerite of the PES with the sharply pointed apex ( Fig. 57–58 View FIGURES 57 – 63 , arrow).

Description. Male. COLORATION ( Fig. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 18 ). Dorsum dark brown with yellow areas. Head. Vertex and frons dull yellowish, sometimes strongly tinged with red; vertex with brownish patch along occipital carina; remainder of head reddish; antenna blackish yellow; segment I yellow with two distinct, red annulations: one situated at basal one third, other situated apically; segment II blackish, weakly paler, dark brown basally; segment III yellow; segment IV dull yellowish; labium yellow brown with red areas; labial segment I red; segment II yellow, red apically; segments III and IV brown; segment IV with yellow annulation basally. Thorax. Pronotum. Dark brown, with broad yellow stripes laterally and brownish broad tinge near anterior margin. Scutellum. Yellow, with large, dark brown patch basally reaching medial portion. Thoracic pleura. Proepimeron yellowish red; remaining pleura brown, except for castaneous metepisternum; evaporative areas fuscous, peritreme reddish. Hemelytron. Dark brown; membrane pale gray, with fuscous venation. Legs. Coxae and femora reddish; tibia and tarsi yellow. STRUCTURE AND VESTITURE ( Figs. 5 View FIGURES 1 – 18 , 45 View FIGURES 42 – 47 ). Elongate oval; dorsal surface mixed with dense, semirecumbent and erect setae. Head. Vertex with two moderately raised tubercles, each contiguous with inner margin of eye and occipital carina, vertex also with short longitudinal rib, situated between these tubercles and almost contiguous with occipital carina; frons rugose medially; antennal segment I weakly narrowed basally, covered with moderately dense, recumbent setae, remainder of segment I cylindrical; segment II stout, weakly thickened towards apex, covered with dense, relatively thick, semirecumbent setae; apex of labium reaching just beyond apex of procoxae. Thorax. Scutellum. Weakly arched. Thoracic pleura. Proepimeron deeply and coarsely punctate; remaining pleura inpunctate, strongly polished; peritreme rounded, somewhat convex, smooth and shining. Hemelytron. Membrane with minor cell hardly visible; major cell nearly triangular. Legs. Coxae covered with sparse, fine, semirecumbent setae; femora and tibiae covered with moderately dense setae; tarsomere II divided medially; pretarsal claw toothed subapically.

Male genitalia. Endosoma ( Figs. 57–58 View FIGURES 57 – 63 ). Weakly membranous; DSS strongly broadened basally, curved apically; AES nearly cylindrical at basal half, strongly twisted and somewhat broadened apically; MES strongly curved, strongly broadened at basal one fourth, remainder of the segment nearly cylindrical, sharply pointed apically; PES composed of two sclerites: one large, hook-shaped, and other smaller, narrowed toward an apex; large sclerite of PES with swelling posteriorly; small sclerite of PES with sharply pointed apex ( Figs. 57–58 View FIGURES 57 – 63 , arrow). Left paramere ( Fig. 59 View FIGURES 57 – 63 ). Rounded; apical process contiguous with width subapically, somewhat pointed apically; sensory lobe weakly convex.

Measurements. 3: body length 4.3, width 2.1. Head. Length 0.45, width 1.1, diameter of eye in dorsal view 0.33. Antenna. Length of segment I 0.4, II 1.1, III 0.32, IV 0.7. Labium. Length of segment I 0.48, II 0.45, III 0.28, IV 0.3. Pronotum. Length 1.15, width of anterior margin 0.65, length of lateral margin 1.0, width posterior margin 1.62.

Female. Unknown.

Etymology. Specific epithet “cognatus,” (related, similar) is used to denote the close similarity of this species to D. colubrina .

Distribution ( Fig. 56 View FIGURE 56 ). Malaysia (Borneo: Sarawak: Gunong Mulu National Park).

Type material. Holotype 3: SARAWAK: Gunong Mulu Nat. Park; Gonong Api Melinau Gorge, 1.iii–8.vi. 1978, limestone forest; N. M. Collins, RGS Mulu exped., B.M. 1978-1 ( BMNH).
