Type host and locality: Labeo coubie , Niger River (Bamako), Mali.
Other records: Labeo coubie , Senegal system, Baoulé River (Missira), Mali ( Guégan et al. 1988); Labeo parvus , Niger basin (Milo, Tinkisso), Senegal basin (Bafing), Konkouré basin (Konkouré), Little Scarcies basin (Kaba, Mongo), Rokel basin (Rokel), Bagbwe basin (Bagbwe) and Bandama basin (Bandama blanc), West Africa; Barbus wurtzi, Little Scarcies basin (Kaba, Mongo), West Africa ( Guégan & Lambert 1990, 1991).
Present records: Labeo coubie, Mare de Simenti (13º 01.790’N; 13º 17.608’W), Gambia River near the Campement du Lion (13º 01.493’N; 13º 14.491’W), Niokolo-Koba National Park, Senegal.
Site: Gill lamellae.
Type specimen: Holotype MNHN HC 264.
Material examined: 8 unflattened and 10 flattened specimens in GAP.
Description: Body length 417 (324–471; n = 8); greatest width 77 (69–90; n = 8) usually near midlength. Haptor 84 (73–99; n = 8) long, 138 (107–168; n = 8) wide. Single pair of anchors (dorsal): inner length 38 (36–39; n = 10); outer length 27 (26–28; n = 10); inner root 16 (15–18) long; outer root 2 (1–2; n = 10) long; point 14 (13–16) long. One bar (dorsal): 27 (26–29; n = 10) long, 3 (2–6; n = 10) wide. Hooks 7 pairs, dissimilar in size; hook lengths (n = 7): pairs I, II, III, V = 15 (14–16); pair IV = 17 (16–18); pairs VI, VII = 16 (15–17). Needles (1 pair) located near hooks of pair V. Vagina a short tube, weakly sclerotized, 14 (13–16; n = 10) long. Copulatory organ consists of incurvate tube with basal ampulla and a bifid accessory piece; total length 23 (20–25; n = 10); tube trace-length 23 (22–24; n = 10).
Remarks: The morphology and measurements of the specimens found by us on Labeo coubie correspond well to the original description of Dactylogyrus falcilocus from the same host in Mali ( Guégan et al. 1988). Only minor differences could be detected in size of hooks, which is somewhat shorter in specimens from Mali (i.e. 12–16 vs. 14–18). Also, morphometrical features of this parasite reported on L. parvus and Barbus wurtzi from Guinea and Sierra Leone ( Guégan & Lambert 1990, 1991) are in general agreement with those of the present specimens.
