Differential diagnosis. Cypselurus n. naresii ( Figs. 17 View FIGURE 17 , 25 View FIGURE 25 ) differs from the other four subspecies in the morphology and length of the chin barbel, which is very long ( Figs. 20 View FIGURE20 , 25 View FIGURE 25 ) with two very wide lateral triangular lobes basally and a narrowed posterior part, usually having a paler pigmentation (much alike C. comatus , see below); also in slightly fewer number of predorsal scales (except C. n. socotranus , see Table 3).

Common names. The name “pharao flying fish” is most frequently used for C. naresii . The name “whipbarbel pharao flying fish” (Russian: “хлыстоусый стрижехвост-фараон”) is proposed here for the subspecies C. n. naresii .

Distribution. Cypselurus n. naresii has southernmost distribution ( Fig. 24 View FIGURE 24 ) and is found from off southeastern Australia (AMS C.3493, between Lord Howe and Cronulla) to western Polynesia (IORAS 04254, 22°19’S 179°40’E).
