Description: —Evergreen woody lianas, large, up to 15 m long. Stems cylindrical, blackish brown, up to 20 cm in diameter; young shoots appressed puberulent, densely covered with brownish lenticels. Leaves pinnately trifoliolate, alternate, papery to subleathery, appressed puberulent to glabrescent above, appressed puberulent beneath, often turning black above when dry; rachis 3.5–8.5 cm long, including petiole 2.5–6.5 cm long; petiolules 3–5 mm long; terminal leaflet symmetric, wide obovate to narrow elliptic, (3–)4–8 (–12.5) × (1.5–)2–5(–9.6) cm, base cuneate to obtuse, apex rounded, sometimes emarginate or acuminate, often with a minute tip; lateral leaflets opposite, asymmetric; secondary nerves 4–6 on each side of midvein, obvious, looped near margin, prominent below; stipules ovate-triangular, blackish, apex acute, ca. 1.7–2 mm, persistent; stipels subulate, ca. 1–1.7 mm long, persistent. Pseudoracemes axillary and terminal, sometimes branched; each pseudoraceme 10–30 cm long, many flowered, with a tawny hairy rachis; brachyblasts wart-like, distinct, 2–3 mm long, usually with 5–7 flowers; pedicles short, about 2–3 mm long; primary bract ovate-triangular, scarious, inserted at base of brachyblast, caducous; secondary bracts, scarious, ovate-triangular, inserted at base of pedicle, caducous; bracteoles 2, ovate, inserted at the base of calyx, persistent. Flower purple to red, easily dropped off when open; calyx campanulate, 4-lobed, tawny sericeous on both sides; the upper lobe entire minutely 2-toothed at apex, the three lower lobes triangular, apex, ca. 3.0–3.6 × 2.0– 2.5 mm, the lower one longest, forming a cover for the corolla in bud; tube ca. 2.5 mm long; petals glabrous; standard suborbicular, ca. 7–10 × 7–10 mm, reflexed, emarginate at the apex, with a yellow-green patch and two reflexed auricles at base as well as a 1.5–2 mm claw; wing oblong, 7–8 × 2.5–3 mm, with two small auricles and a ca. 2 mm long claw at base of the blade; keel falcate, slightly larger than wing, 8–8.5 × 3.7 mm, with a 2–3 mm long claw; stamens 10, diadelphous, ca. 11 mm long, with small openings (fenestrae) at both sides at base; vexillary stamen free; anthers elliptic, yellow, ca. 0.6 × 0.3 mm; floral disk intrastaminal, annular, 10-lobed, ca. 0.5 mm long; ovary sericeous, slightly compressed, with 5–10 (usually 8) ovules, slightly stipitate; stiple sericeous, ca. 1–1.5 mm long; style inflexed, glabrous, extending out the staminal tube; stigma minutely capitate. Pod thin woody, flat, narrow oblong, 3–8 × 0.9–1.5 cm, tawny sericeous outside, brown and dehiscent when mature, with a narrow wing on the upper suture and a clear beak at apex; wing 1–2 mm wide; beak 2–5 mm long. Seeds (1–)3–5(–7) per legume, flat, reniform, 5–7 × 3.2–4.5 × 1.0– 1.5 mm, light green at first and black when mature, smooth and shiny; hilum central. Flowering from June to October, and fruiting from July to December. It grows in sparse woodlands, open forests or secondary forests at an elevation of 200–2500 m above sea level.

Notes: — Craspedolobium was long considered as an endemic genus to China ( Hu 1955, Hutchinson 1964, Geesink 1984, Ying & Zhang 1994, Wei, 1994, 2001, Wu et al. 2007, Zhu 2012, Li 2020), but it was also found in Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand ( Lôc 1998, Lôc & Vidal 2001, Kumar & Sane 2003, Xu et al. 2008, Wei & Padley 2010). One collection from Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle (P. K. Loc & N. Q. Truong HAL10380B, barcode P03602385, P03602386) cited in this study showed that Craspedolobium is a new genus record for the flora of Vietnam ( Fig. 5 View FIGURE 5 ). This taxon is worthy of monitoring actions for its in situ and ex situ conservation ( Perrino & Wagensommer 2021), as well as detailed studies for a better definition on its ecology, vegetation, and identification of any threats.

In morphology, we found that this taxon has three different types of bracts in the inflorescences, i.e. a primary one at base of each brachyblast, a secondary one at base of each pedicle, and two bracteoles at base of each calyx, as given in the description above and as showed in Fig. 3F View FIGURE 3 . The examination of bracts may be important for the understanding in the evolution of inflorescences. In addition, the floral disk character of this taxon was unclear in previous studies. Most authors did not referred its disk in the descriptions ( Harms 1921, Hu 1955, Hutchinson 1964, Wei 1994, 2001, Sun 2006, Wei & Padley 2010). Lôc (1998) pointed out this genus has no disk, while Geesink (1984) stated its disk is distinct. Our observations showed that this taxon has a 10-lobed annular disk (about 0.5 mm tall) around base of ovary.
