Corethrella (Corethrella) anniae Borkent , new species

DIAGNOSIS: Male adult: unknown. Female adult: only extant species of Corethrella with the wings, legs, and most of thorax uniformly pigmented, but with the ventrum of the katepisternum pale ( Fig. 40A).

DESCRIPTION: Male adult. Unknown. Female adult. Descriptive statistics: see Tables 6–11. Head: Outline in anterior view somewhat circular ( Fig. 6H). Coronal suture short, extending ventrally about midway along area between ommatidia (as in Fig. 16F). Two large setae on frons between ventromedial area of ommatida (as in Fig. 16F). Antenna uniformly brown; pedicel without distinctive, more elongate, stout, dorsal or dorsolateral setae; flagellomeres as in Fig. 26F, sensilla coeloconica distributed as in Table 1; flagellomere 13 with well-developed apical bifurcation. Mandible with small, pointed teeth. Clypeus ( Fig. 17J) squarish. Palpus ( Fig. 33L) brown; segment 3 swollen apically. Thorax ( Fig. 40A): Brown with about ventral third pale. Posterior portion of dorsocentral row with single elongate setae situated somewhat lateral to one another. Prescutal suture elongate, interrupted by area of pale cuticle. Anterior anepisternum divided diagonally by sinuous suture, dorsal portion about equal to ventral portion. Ventral portion of posterior anepisternum not differentiated from dorsal portion, anterior margin more darkly pigmented than posterior margin. Wing (Fig. 67A): Apex of R 2 slightly distal to apex of M 1. Plain, without pattern of pigmented veins and/or scales; veins (other than costa and wing margin) with very slender scales. Halter as dark as scutellum. Legs ( Fig. 40A): Uniformly pigmented. With only slender setae, lacking scales (except for some in patch of whip-like setae on posterior portion of hind tibia). Claws of each leg equal to those of others; equal on each leg, simple (without inner teeth). Empodia slender. Abdomen: Uniformly brown.

Immatures. Unknown.

DISTRIBUTION AND BIONOMICS: Corethrella anniae is known from southeastern corner of Costa Rica (Fig. 120A) at altitudes ranging from 50–560 m. Specimens have been collected by sweeping and Malaise traps .

TYPES: Holotype, female adult on microscope slide, labeled " HOLOTYPE Corethrella anniae Borkent , 1 km W. Puerto Viejo, Limón, Costa Rica, 30-X-1993, A. Borkent, CD1644" ( CNCI) . Paratypes: 1 ♀, Send. Espavel, Hitoy Cerere , Limón, Costa Rica, 560 m, 11-III–1-IV-2003 ( INBC) ; 1 ♀, from previous locality but 18-IX-3-X-2003 ( INBC) .

DERIVATION OF SPECIFIC EPITHET: The name anniae is proposed in recognition of the tremendous contribution to the collection of Corethrellidae and Ceratopogonidae at INBio by Annia Julia Picado Calvo, a highly skilled parataxonomist working there.
