status

Columba erythrothorax Meyen, 1834a: 98 , pl. 16.

Now: Metriopelia ceciliae gymnops Bonaparte, 1855 (this paper).

Holotype: ZMB 11301 ( Lichtenstein 1832, Nr. 56 sub “ Columba ”), collected by Meyen in “ April ” [= 6 Apr 1831; Meyen 1834b: 475] in “ Peru ” [= Pichupichuni, Peru; see below].

Type locality. The holotype was shot “bei Pisacoma im Monat April ” (“at Pizacoma in April”) according to Meyen (1834a: 99). In his travel report, Meyen (1834b: 475) specified that he collected this dove on 6 April at the village of “ Piche-Pichun ” [= Pichupichuni]. We thus ascertain the type locality as Pichupichuni, Puno Region, Peru [16.59°S, 69.38°W]. GoogleMaps

Remarks Columba erythrothorax Meyen, 1834a , is a junior primary homonym of Columba erythrotorax [sic] Temminck in Knip & Temminck (1811: unpaginated; see also David et al. 2010: 12 for the spelling). Tschudi (1844: 305) replaced Columba erythrothorax Meyen with Columba monticola (see also Tschudi 1846: 276), but the latter name is preoccupied by Columba monticola Vieillot (1818b: 355) = Columba squamosa Bonnaterre (1792: 234) (see also Oberholser 1918: 48 –49).

The next specific name applicable to this dove is gymnops. This was a manuscript name created by George Robert Gray (1808–1872) for a specimen in the NHMUK. It was first published by Bonaparte (1855: 23) as “ Ch [amaepelia] gymnops, Gray” in the synonymy of “ Chamaepelia anais, Lesson ” (= Columba anais Lesson, 1847 ). Shortly thereafter, G.R. Gray (1856: 53) listed it as “ Chaemepelia [sic] gymnops, G. R. Gray, MSS” in the synonymy of “ Peristera anais (Lesson) ”, and Bonaparte (1857: 76) as “ gymnops, Gr.” in the synonymy of “ Chamaepelia anais, Less. ” Chubb (1917: 18, 1919: 38) used this specific name in the combination “ Gymnopelia ceciliae gymnops (Gray MS.)” as a valid name for a taxon. Peters (1937: 102) argued that gymnops of Chubb (1917) is preoccupied by gymnops of Bonaparte (1855) and replaced gymnops Chubb with a new name, Metriopelia ceciliae zimmeri . Peters’s (1937) reasoning and his zimmeri were accepted by some subsequent authors (e.g. Baptista et. al. 1997: 167; Gibbs et al. 2001: 351; Dickinson 2003: 168; Dickinson & Remsen 2013: 65). On the other hand, Hellmayr & Conover (1942: 512) argued that gymnops of Chubb (1917) is not preoccupied by gymnops of Bonaparte (1855), because the latter was published in synonymy. However, provisions of Art. 11.6.1 of the ICZN (1999) apply here and due to Chubb’s (1917, 1919) action, gymnops is available from Bonaparte (1855). The correct name for the dove under question is thus Metriopelia ceciliae gymnops ( Bonaparte, 1855) .
