Cnemoplites gahani Lameere, 1912 View in CoL
( Figs. 6 View Figure 6 I–L, 17A View Figure 17 )
Cnemoplites gahani Lameere, 1912: 134 View in CoL . TL: Hermannsburg , Northern Territory. Lectotype in BNHM (designated here).
Diagnosis. Cnemoplites gahani can be separated from other Cnemoplites species by the following characters: pronotum with at least some smooth area medially in both sexes; antennal scape as long as or slightly longer than antennomere 3; antennomere 3 about 1.5 times as long as antennomere 4; antennomere 11 elongate, almost twice of antennomere 10 length.
Description. Male. Length 50–60 mm. Antennae extending to the middle of elytra; antennal scape extending beyond the posterior margin of eyes; antennomeres 3–8 weakly expanded apically; tibia bearing very dense hairs especially on ventral side; abdominal ventrites 1–4 covered with very dense and extensive setal patches. Female. Identification uncertain.
Types. Lectotype male deposited in BNHM designated here ( BNHM-010799796 , Figs. 6 View Figure 6 I–J), with label “Hermannsburg, Central Australia, H.J. Hillier, 1911- 311”.
Other Material examined ( Fig. 17A View Figure 17 ). South Australia: AM (1 ♂): S. Australia, A.H.C. Seitz. Queensland: ANIC (1 ♂): Edungalba, 1957, E.E.A.
Remarks. Although the female syntype (BNHM- 010799817, Fig. 6K View Figure 6 ) bears the identical collecting labels as the male lectotype, we are uncertain if it belongs to the same species and have excluded it from the type series. This female differs from the male lectotype by having shorter antennal scape, shorter antennomeres 3 and 11, broader hypomeron; almost smooth elytra, and elongate tarsomere 1. This specimen is morphologically identical to the female of Eurynassa tuberculicollis sp. nov. ( Fig. 8K View Figure 8 ), occurring in the same area.
Taxonomic status of this species is uncertain as we have no molecular samples and very limited material for disposal. In addition to the lectotype we have found only two males that largely agree with the type but no females were collected associated with them.
