Remarks. The collection of Motschulsky (ZMU) contains three specimens of Ch. semipurpureus : a wellpreserved male, designated as lectotype herewith ( Figs 7–8 View FIGURES 7–12 ); a relatively well-preserved female designated as a paralectotype herewith; and an example badly damaged by dermestid beetle larvae, of which only two elytra with a small part of the thorax and a leg, all glued to piece of cardboard, have remained. The last specimen is excluded from the type series, as it is badly destroyed and bears no labels of Motschulsky.

When describing Ch. posticalis, Motschulsky did not indicate the number of type specimens, although indirect evidence (Long. 6 l. - lat. 21 / 4 l.) suggests there was only one involved ( Motschulsky 1854: 44). The only specimen found in the Motschulsky Collection is badly damaged (the head, pronotum and most of the legs are missing) and has the author’s label reading “ Chlaenius posticalis Motsch. China bor.”, which does not exactly match the type locality: “environs de Pékin.” Nevertheless, we consider it possible to consider this specimen as the holotype of Ch. posticalis . When describing new taxa in that paper, Motschulsky provided no geographic data either, but the type locality of Ch. posticalis and other new species he then identified could easily be derived from the title: “Diagnoses de coléoptères nouveaux trouvés par MM. Tatarinoff et Gaschkéwitsch aux environs de Pékin.” Both Doctor A.A. Tatarinov and student I.A. Goshkevich were members of the 12 th Russian Spiritual Mission in Beijing, which operated in China in 1839–1849. As noted by Feklova and Zhang (2017), “A collection of zoological objects was carried out by the mission doctor A.A. Tatarinov and student V.V. Gorsky. With the permission of the Chinese authorities, they made a short excursion to the north of China ”. Subsequently, the collections “from collegiate adviser Gashkevich and court adviser Tatarinov” arrived to the Museum of the Zoological Institute in St. Petersburg ( Strauch 1889), whence they obviously became available to V. Motschulsky.

Comparing the types of Ch. semipurpureus and Ch. posticalis ( Figs 11–12 View FIGURES 7–12 ) with material from Primorsky Territory has revealed that both taxa of Motschulsky belong to one and the same species. As a result, Chlaenius semipurpureus Motschulsky, 1865 is formally to be considered as a subjective junior synonym of Chlaenius posticalis Motschulsky, 1854 , syn. nov.

In Catalogue of Palaearctic Coleoptera ( Kirschenhofer 2017) , the name Ch. hospes A. Morawitz, 1862 ( Figs 9–10 View FIGURES 7–12 ) was missing, although its synonymy with Ch. posticalis had long been established by M. de Chaudoir (1876: 273) and it had repeatedly been listed since as a junior synonym ( Kwon & Lee 1986; Kryzhanovskij et al. 1995).
