Centris (Melanocentris) laticincta ( Spinola, 1841) View in CoL
Hemisia laticincta Spinola, 1841 View in CoL . 148.
Type data: Syntypes female ( MSNT, not examined).
Type locality: French Guiana: Cayenne .
Centris insignis Smith, 1854 View in CoL . 375. N ew junior synonymy
Type data: Smith (1854) described this species based on an undetermined number of females collected in an unknown locality in Colombia. A syntype is currently housed at OUMNH and is here designated the lectotype. The specimen has the following data label: [Col. 5 Goud [handwritten]\ insignis Sm Co. \ Lecto [handwritten] type [printed] Centris insignis Sm J. S. Moure 1957 [handwritten]\ Named as Centris insignis Smith 1854 in W.W. Saunders colln. OX. UNI.MUS.NAT. HIST. ( OUMNH). [printed]. Moure & Seabra (1960) mentioned the “type” of this species was housed at OUMNH, indicating a few measurements of the head of the specimen. Unfortunately, these authors did not provide additional information, like the data labels, that could help to recognize the specimen. Depending on the interpretation of Moure & Seabra’s information, the ICZN Article number 74.6 could apply, turning unnecessary the lectotype designation here proposed.
Type locality: Colombia .
Centris insignis scutellaris Friese, 1899 View in CoL . 42. New junior synonymy
Type data: Holotype male with the following data labels: Muzo [handwritten]\ Centris insignis v. scutellaris det. Friese 1898\ [white label with red lateral margins] holotype [print] Centris insignis scutellaris Friese, 1899 [handwritten] det. Melo, 2016 [printed]\ [rectangular label with QR code http://coll.mfn-berlin.de/u/ 58fa44 ( ZMB, examined).
Type locality: Colombia: Boyacá department: Muzo .
Centris zonalis Dominique, 1898 View in CoL . 59.
Type data: Lectotype female ( MHNN, examined). Subsequent designation: Rasmussen et al. (2007).
Type locality: French Guiana: Maroni River .
Comments: Taxonomic decision for synonymy: Rasmussen et al. (2007) and this work. The primary type of C. insignis was labeled as lectotype by Moure in 1957 but this designation was never published. The only difference between the species identified as C. laticincta and C. insignis is the coloration of the scopa, brownish in the former and orange in the latter species. Long series of specimens show a striking variation in this character, even among specimens collected together. The type locality of C. insignis cannot be further narrowed down than to Colombia. The locality label of the lectotype indicates that it was collected by the French explorer and naturalist Justin Goudot (1802‒1850). This collector settled in Bogotá during most of his life and between 1822 and 1842 he explored ter- ritories of “New Granada” ( Palmer, 1918), a currently non-existent republic consisting primarily of present-day Colombia and Panama with smaller portions of today’s Costa Rica, Brazil, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Peru and Venezuela.
Centris insignis scutellaris View in CoL was included in the subgenus C. (Ptilotopus) by Moure et al. (2007). The type specimen of this species is housed at ZMB and its examination showed that it belongs to C. (Melanocentris) ( Vélez & Vivallo, 2018), being a male of C. laticincta View in CoL with yellow pubescence on the dorsal surface of the mesoscutellum.
