TYPE LOCALITY: Cuba, Matanzas Prov., Sierra de Hato Nuevo .
DISTRIBUTION: Ciénaga (swamp) de Zapata (Matanzas Prov., Cuba).
COMMENT: Subgenus Pygmaeocapromys ; see Varona, 1979, Poeyana, 194:6. Placed in the genus Mesocapromys , subgenus Paracapromys by Kratochvil et al., 1978, Acta Sci. Nat. Sci. Bohemoslov-Brno, 12(11):15, and Rodríguez et al., 1979, Folia Zool., 28(2):97-102. However, retained in Capromys by Hall, 1981:863, Varona, 1979, Poeyana, 194:6, and Corbet and Hill, 1980:191. GSM, GCC, and CAW include Mesocapromys in Capromys . Originally based on fossil material, but subsequently found living in the Zapata Swamp (GSM).
