Notes:—The fossil-species Berberis ambigua Kovar-Eder & Kvaček was incorrectly published as a new combination, being based on the illegitimate homonym, Ilex ambigua Unger (1847) non Elliott (1824), used previously for the extant species. However, Berberis ambigua Kovar-Eder & Kvaček (2004) is a later illegitimate homonym of extant Berberis ambigua Ahrendt (1941: 60) .
