NOTES: Lister (1925) mentions that the epithet var. arborea is “arboreal, from the sporangia appearing on living trees” and that it “has been obtained repeatedly in Aberdenshire by the Rev. W. Cran among moss and lichen on trunks of living trees, associated with B. versicolor and B. affinis ”. We designated BM 2412 as the lectotype as it is the only collection in BM with data that coincide with the description. Notebook XXII: 28 is written on the label, and the specimen is commented on and illustrated there. In the same box there are two other fragments of material from “Westhill, 9.12, XXXII.143” and “Typical Westhill 11.16, N. 38.78” that we consider to be syntypes. In BM we also located a slide (22) with a reference to “Westhill, Skene, 24.9.12, GL & W. Cran XXXII.143” that we consider as a syntype. This variety is currently included in the concept of the species.
