5.2.10. Myrcia valenzuelana View in CoL (A.Rich.) Grisebach (1866: 86). Eugenia valenzuelana A.Richard (in Sagra 1846: 593). Aulomyrcia sagrae [“ sagraea ”] O. Berg (1861: 655), nom. illeg. Type:— CUBA. Valenzuela, unknown date, Sagra s.n. or 9(?) (lectotype P00161098 [image!], designated here; isolectotypes P00161099 [image!], P00161100 [image!]).

Myrcia valenzuelana has inflorescences with some subopposite branching, turbinate flowers with an extended hypanthium and pentamerous calyx, features that place the species in M. sect. Aulomyrcia .

Berg (1861) based the description of Aulomyrcia sagrae on the same collection that Richard based the description of Eugenia valenzuelana ; A. sagrae is here considered homotypic and illegitimate. The type specimens are at P, the main herbarium of Ramón de la Sagra’s collection ( Stafleu & Cowan 1985). The lectotype bears Richard’s and Berg’s handwriting, identifying the specimen as E. valenzuelana and A. sagrae , respectively.
