Atyphella telokdalam Ballantyne View in CoL sp. nov.
Figs 196−205 View FIGURES 196−205
Type. Holotype male, 3 paratype males. INDONESIA. Sumatra, Telok Dalam (subdistrict in the South Nias regency), no date, I. Polunin ( ANIC). All types preserved in 70% ethanol.
Diagnosis. 10.0 −11.0 mm long; dorsally pale brown with darker brown markings at elytral bases and apices ( Figs 196, 197 View FIGURES 196−205 ); colour similar to that of Asymmetricata humeralis , from which it can be distinguished by the entire T8 and entire LO in V7 (T 8 in As. humeralis is emarginated on one side only, and the LO in V7 is bipartite).
Description of male. 10.0 −11.0 mm long. Colour ( Figs 196, 197 View FIGURES 196−205 ): dorsally pale brown with darker brown markings at elytral bases and apices; ventral surface of thorax mid brown; legs pale brown with darker brown tarsi; basal abdominal ventrites pale brown ( Fig. 198 View FIGURES 196−205 ), V5 with posterior half darker brown; LO in V6, 7 pale yellow; all abdominal tergites light brown except for T8 which is pale and semitransparent. Pronotum: width wider than that across elytral humeri; lateral margins approach in the posterior area but not closely. Elytra: subparallel sided, with inner two interstitial lines prominent and slightly paler than rest. Head ( Fig. 204 View FIGURES 196−205 ): GHW 2.5 mm; ASD = ASW; SIW 0.4 mm; labial palpi in the form of a broad laterally flattened triangle with inner margin dentate. Abdomen: V7 with no PLP and a broad short apically rounded MPP. Aedeagal sheath ( Figs 203, 205 View FIGURES 196−205 ): asymmetrical, sternite emarginated on its right side with a further deeper emargination just behind apex; left side of sternite with a short acute projection behind apex; anterior margin of tergite evenly emarginated. Aedeagus ( Figs 199−201 View FIGURES 196−205 ): essentially symmetrical, with ML narrower than LL which are relatively broad at their apices and closely approach along most of their middorsal length; anterior margin of LL evenly rounded.
Etymology. The locality names are combined to represent a noun in apposition with the generic name.
Remarks. Including this new species four species have now been described with a pale dorsum having base and apex of elytra darker in colour, viz. As. humeralis , Aty. palauensis , Aty. telokdalam sp. nov., and Luciola flavescens (Boisduval) , which is treated here as species incertae sedis. It was not possible to determine the locality for the last mentioned species which was given as ‘Oceanie’. Asymmetricata humeralis has T8 asymmetrical, and the two Atyphella species are distinguished in the key to males.
