Apotropina bistriata sp. n.

Diagnosis. Scutum yellowish brown with 2 brown longitudinal stripes, which extend to scutoscutellar suture. Legs yellow except for mid and hind coxae, distal portions of femora, distal portion of fore tibia and tarsomere 5 yellowish brown. R4+5 and M1+2 parallel distally. Cercus incised on ventral margin, the depth 1/3 of its height. Postgonite with a small incision on ventral 1/3 of distal end.

Description. Male. Body length 2.2 mm, wing length 2.1 mm.

Head brown with gray microtomentum, 0.85 times as long as high; face yellow, somewhat concave in lateral view, facial carina indistinct; frons brown except for anterior 1/3 yellow, 0.9 times as long as wide, projecting only slightly in front of eye; gena yellow, broad, 0.5 times as wide as first flagellomere; parafacial indistinct. Ocellar triangle brown, extending to 0.6 of frons, with a pointed anterior apex; ocellar tubercle light brown. Occiput and postgena brown. Clypeus light brown. Cephalic setae and setulae black. Antenna yellow with thick grayish microtomentum except for dorsal margin of first flagellomere brown; first flagellomere as wide as long; arista yellow except for basal segment brown, with short brown setulae. Proboscis bright brown to yellow with yellow setulae; palpus yellow with black setulae.

Thorax yellowish brown with gray microtomentum. Scutum as long as wide, with 2 brown longitudinal stripes, which extend to scutoscutellar suture. Thoracic pleuron shiny yellowish brown without microtomentum except for ventral 2/3 of katepisternum and posteroventral portion of katepimeron blackish brown. Scutellum brown, 0.6 times as long as wide; ap sc developed, 2.7 times as long as scutellum; sap sc 1.5 times as long as scutellum. Setae and setulae on thorax black, developed; npl 1+1, a npl developed, p npl hair-like, 2/3 times as long as a npl; a pa developed, p pa hair-like, subequal to a pa; 1 presutural dc and 3 postsutural dc, the posterior one longer than others; katepisternum with an upcurved long seta. Legs yellow except for mid and hind coxae, distal portions of femora, distal portion of fore tibia and tarsomere 5 yellowish brown. Setulae on legs black. Mid tibia with a distinct black apical spur, which is longer than diameter of tibia; hind tibia with a short black apical spur, which is shorter than diameter of tibia. Tibial organ oblong, narrow. Wing 2.5 times as long as wide, hyaline; veins brown. Relative lengths of 2nd: 3rd: 4th costal sections = 3.3: 2: 1; r-m at basal 0.6 of discal cell; R4+5 and M1+2 parallel distally. Halter pale yellow.

Abdomen yellowish brown with gray microtomentum except for tergite 1 yellow, distal portions of tergites 2– 5 brown; venter yellow. Setulae on abdomen black.

Male genitalia ( Figs. 4–7 ): Epandrium brown with ventrodistal corner slightly prolonged; surstylus acute apically. Cercus weakly convex on dorsal margin, incised on ventral margin, the depth 1/3 of its height. Postgonite longer than pregonite, postgonite gradually narrowed basally, with a small incision on ventral 1/3 of distal end; distiphallus longer than basiphallus in lateral view; phallapodeme long with basal stalk broad in lateral view. Hypandrium narrowed.

Female. Unknown.

Type material. Holotype ♂, CHINA: Guangdong: Zengcheng, Nankun Mountain, 710 m, 14. VII. 2003, Coll. Shuwen An.

Distribution. China (Guangdong).

Remarks. The new species is somewhat similar to A. fuscipleuris (Becker) , but can be separated from the latter by the following features: proboscis bright brown to yellow; scutum yellowish brown with 2 brown longitudinal stripes, which extend to scutoscutellar suture; legs yellow except for mid and hind coxae, distal portions of femora, distal portion of fore tibia and tarsomere 5 yellowish brown. In A. fuscipleuris , the proboscis is shiny black; the scutum is entirely rusty brown; the legs are reddish yellow except for tarsi black ( Becker 1911).

Etymology. The specific name is from the Latin bi- (“two”) and striatus (“stripe”), referring to the scutum with 2 brown longitudinal stripes.
